material classroom structure & setup
The above image shows how I would like to organize my future classroom.
When you first walk into the classroom, you will see the SMARTBoard and a rug up in the front. Around the SMARTBoard and rug, you will find four student tables and 4-5 chairs at each table. During instruction, students will be sitting on the rug. When it is time to do activities, the students can quickly get to their seats.
There are two kidney tables located in the classroom. One in the front and one in the back. This is provided in the case of more than one teacher in the classroom working with different small groups of students. The kidney table in the front of the classroom has a whiteboard behind it for easy instruction and modelling. The table in the back does not have a white board, but individual white board can be provided for students when doing informal assessments.
The student cubbies and storage areas are located along the wall. This is easy access for students so they know where to go when they first walk in to put away their coats and bags. There is also a sink located next to the cubbies for students to wash their hands in or get a quick drink.
The teacher desk is located in the back corner with shelves for storage behind the desk. This provides the teacher with a space of their own and storage for lesson materials.
In front of the teacher's desk is more storage space for homework bins. This is where students can pick up or hand in their homework. This is a way for students to automatically start getting into a routine when they get their belongings settled in their cubbies. They can hand in any homework they had that night or can pick up homework from the day before. This helps build some independence for the students because they will know what is expected and won't have to ask where their homework goes.
Towards the back, there is a computer station. This is where students can do research, type up their work, and other educational activities. This station can be used by all students and for students who may need accommodations.
In the back corner of the classroom, you will find a reading corner. There are numerous book shelves and book stands that will be filled with different books for students to read. There is a rug, bean bag chairs, regular chairs, and a sofa for students who may feel more comfortable reading in different ways. This is meant to be a corner for students to read independently or to talk about what they are reading with their peers.
There are two bulletin boards located in this classroom. One bulletin board is to display what is being learned in the classroom. This will help remind students what they are learning about and will let other teachers and families know what is currently being discussed in the classroom. The other bulletin board is for student work samples. This bulletin board will be able to show actual student work and what the students have accomplished. Students, teachers, and families can look back at this bulletin board and see different students' strengths in the class.
